XMunashe a Local Artist Going Higher

Xmunashe is one of Australia’s most intriguing emerging artists, carving out a lane defined by raw improvisation, emotional honesty, and a refusal to play by industry rules.

Born in Perth and now based in Sydney, he first caught attention in 2023 with intimate clips of soulful keys, soaring vibrato, and lo‑fi performance spaces that felt more like shared moments than content. His live shows are largely unrehearsed, with Xmunashe and long‑time collaborators Joshuah and Jonti building songs in real time, swapping instruments, and letting the room shape the music. What began as an accident during a laptop failure has become his signature: spontaneous, communal performances that blur the line between audience and artist.

With two release parties, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne, this is definitely one artist we have been sleeping on and didn’t know till it hit.

Xmunashe’s touring history is unconventional, shaped less by traditional circuits and more by movement, community, and spontaneous performance spaces. After emerging in Perth, he spent several years traveling between Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney, performing in lofts, studios, churches, and creative hubs rather than standard venues. These trips became the backbone of his artistic identity—each city offering a different audience energy that fed into his improvisational style.

His early “tours” were essentially self‑organized micro‑runs, often announced last‑minute and built around intimate, word‑of‑mouth gatherings. As his following grew, he expanded to Brisbane and Adelaide, continuing to prioritise small, immersive rooms over large stages. These travels also shaped the collaborative trio of Xmunashe, Joshuah, and Jonti, who often journeyed together, turning each show into a living experiment.

By 2025–2026, Xmunashe’s movement across Australia had become a kind of roving residency, with fans describing his shows as “pop‑up emotional experiences” rather than tour stops. His debut mixtape Make Yourself At Home reflects this nomadic period, blending recordings and ideas formed during these travels. While he hasn’t yet embarked on an international tour, his growing online presence and cult‑like live reputation suggest that a global run is on the horizon.

We interviewed Xmunashe and have the privilege of being the tech behind listening to his latest release and here is what he had to say:

  • How would you describe the art that you create?
- I make xmunashe. Personal.. provoking.. familiar yet new.
  • What is your creative process?

- Whether in the studio or an improvised live show it always starts with me throwing my hands at a random chord progression and seeing what melody’s / lyrics come out

  • What impact are you wanting to have through your art and what motivates you to do that?

- I want to create thought provoking art, new feelings through sonics and touch on universal feelings/ideas in ways they haven’t been before. I want to offer a new sound to the world always. My favourite artists have done this.

  • As an emerging artist, what are some recent challenges you have faced creatively and how have you / do you (plan to) overcome them?
- The creative challenges usually have something to do with me not being motivated at times and falling out of the rythym of writing consistently.. then it always takes a bit of time to trust myself again.

Munashe wants to leave us a with a statement for those in the creative scene:

"Seek to leave your mark, your own perspective on the large world of art. It’s easier said than done.. nobody has lived the life you’ve lived and has seen things from your own perspective. Learn how to express that unique position."
